Grotte di Frasassi

The Frassassi Caves date back to 1.400.000 million years ago when the source of the Sentino mountain stream was much higher than today and the entire hydrology system was 200-300 meters higher.

It was at this height that the mineralised waters from the artesian water table and the biocarbonate filled waters of the river mixed along the faults creating the early chambers which gradually developed into the unbelievable natural fairy tale world that we see today.

The Frasassi Caves are open to visitors the whole year round. The Ticket and information offices and other services just a short distance from the entrance to the caves.

The guided tour of the Caves lasts about 1 hour. Suggestive light effects and walks have been set up in the Caves.

The temperature inside the Caves is constant at 14 degrees. The Romanesque Temple of St. Vittore and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Frasassi are situated 400 metres above sea level.
